MUMBAI, June 30: Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan today blamed the then CM’s office for allotment of land to the Adarsh housing society.
Deposing as a witness before the two-member probe commission, looking into irregularities in land allotment, Mr Chavan said the revenue Department, which he headed, was not responsible for land allotment as it is made by the chief minister’s office. He was apparently referring to Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was then the CM.
On the inclusion of civilians in Adarsh society, he said the matter was never discussed in his meetings with Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, the promoter of the society.
Earlier, former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh tried to wash his hands off the scam by putting the responsibility on former chief minister Mr Chavan.
Deposing before the commission, he had expressed ignorance about the details of the Adarsh case, whether the land that was alloted to the society was in possession of the Army.
When asked if the society was issued a letter of intent for allotment of land when he was caretaker chief minister, he denied it, sources said.
He blamed bureaucrats and the revenue department, then headed by Mr Chavan, for the bungling.(UNI)
