Srinagar, Oct 10: As the district administration failed in repairing a road in north Kashmir’s Lolab, the local youth under a volunteer group have carried out the necessary repairs of the road on their own.
As per the youth in the area, the road from Gundimacher-Lalpora was quite a nuisance while the administration was time and again apprised of the matter. Despite that, the locals said that the road was not repaired prompting them to take up the job on their own.
“While we were waiting for the administration to take up the necessary repair works of the road, we even tried to inform them through social media, but to no avail, finally compelling us to collect the donations and take up the repair works on our own,” the local youngsters said.
The youth under the ‘J&K Youth Welfare Forum’ took the initiative along with volunteers of Lalpora to work on the road voluntarily so that patients, pregnant women and senior citizens, in particular, do not suffer in future while commuting on the road which is full of potholes.
The locals had also requested the administration to start the repair works of the road by Saturday, failing which they will be left with no option but to do that on their own. “When they did not we went ahead with the collection of the donation and the work was started,” the volunteers said.
A 3-km stretch has now been repaired at the cost of over Rs 50 thousand while the efforts by the local youth are being widely appreciated.
It is to be noted here that while the road has been a nuisance for the locals in the area, there has been an incident reported when a woman after delivering a baby at the hospital was being taken home after a few days suffered internal injuries after the vehicle she was being carried in passed through the road.
“We are happy that matter has now been taken care of even though it has been done by the people on their own, the administration needs to ponder whether they are really making the lives of people easier or are just acting as mute spectators,” the locals said.
