JAMMU, July 21: Army geared up to celebrate 14th Operation Vijay Diwas to honour the martyrs, who laid down their lives during Kargil war in 1999.
The celebration this year will be combined with the Golden Jubilee of the raising of the Forever in Operations Division, which not only participated in the 1999 conflict and won many major battles of the campaign, but has since then been in-charge of the defence of the Kargil area. Interestingly, the Chief of the Army Staff during the conflict, General VP Malik, had once commanded this very Division. To be held over two days, the events planned for the Golden Jubilee celebrations, expected to be attended by a number of officers who commanded this glorious formation include a Golden Jubilee picnic for the Formation’s soldiers followed by a Jubilee Dinner and Barakhana.
The Operation Vijay Diwas celebrations include a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Drass War Memorial, a memorial service accompanied by beating the retreat ceremony and a brass band display. A First Day Cover will also be released on the occasion. A number of retired and serving senior officers of the Army are expected to attend the programme.
The day will be celebrated to honour valiant warriors of the Army, who laid down their lives fourteen years ago, while fighting with Pakistani troops, who tried to occupy peaks on our side of the line of control.
It is to mention that, hundreds of young soldiers climbed the icy heights in Drass, Kargil and Batalik in 1999 to throw out Pakistani infiltrators, who had tried to occupy peaks on our side of the Line of Control.
