“At about 5.30 am, troops of White Knight Corps in the general area of Balakot detected suspicious movement near LoC. Fire was immediately opened by alert troops preventing the infiltration attempt,” the White Knight Corps of the Army said in a post on X.
The post added that the troops repositioned and re-oriented to ensure foolproof domination of the area using all available means.
“Troops are maintaining high alert in their respective areas,” the Corps said.
An intense firing between the two sides started again when the Army search parties moved close to the scene of the earlier encounter, an official said.
The firing continued for sometime but stopped later.
The official said movement of terrorists trying to sneak into the country from Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir was picked up near Dabbi village of Balakot in the early hours of the day, leading to the first encounter.
Faced with heavy firing, the terrorists tried to flee, but reinforcements were rushed and the whole area was cordoned off for a thorough search, the official said.
There were no immediate reports about number of terrorists killed or injured in the gun battle but going by intensity of the firing there is possibility that the infiltrators suffered casualties, fatal or non-fatal.
Troops have intensified search operations on the LoC to ensure that there is no fresh attempt by the terrorists to infiltrate. However, sources said, the intrusion bid has been successfully thwarted.
“Possibility of the injured terrorists having managed to escape back to Pakistan is not ruled out,” the sources said, adding the search operations continued to recover bodies of the terrorists, if they were killed in the operation on this side of LoC.
Troops have been maintaining high alert along the LoC in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri to ensure that the terrorists don’t manage to escape. All infiltration attempts in the past on the LoC have been foiled, the sources said.
Only yesterday, police arrested two terror operatives from Mandi area of Poonch district and recovered two AK-47 rifles and ammunition from their possession.
