KARGIL, Apr 8: The annual Apricot Blossom Festival began in Ladakh with its inauguration at Garkone village in the Kargil district.
This festival witnesses a vibrant celebration of nature, culture, and the arrival of the agriculture and horticulture season, reflecting the deep connection of Ladakhi communities with their environment, as most residents depend on a land-based economy.
With the beginning of spring season, many valleys of Ladakh turn pink and white as apricot trees come into full bloom.

Organised by the Tourism Department of the administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the festival aims to promote tourism beyond the peak summer season and showcase the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Since its inception, the festival has been drawing a growing number of local residents, domestic tourists, and foreign visitors eager to experience Ladakh in spring. It is often compared to the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Set amidst blooming apricot orchards, the celebrations across different villages offer a range of attractions, including traditional music and dance performances, stalls featuring local produce, and a variety of dishes made from apricots and buckwheat.
At Garkone, villagers extended a warm welcome to visitors with homemade food and locally grown products. The event highlighted the area’s traditional lifestyle and its close relationship with nature.
Started in 2021, the festival has quickly evolved into a significant springtime event in Ladakh, celebrating community life, culture, and the changing season. Though neither very new nor very old, it has now become a regular annual feature in Ladakh, with the Tourism Department organising it every year.
According to the official schedule, the festival will be held across various scenic villages of both Leh and Kargil districts from April 8 to April 16. Following the inauguration at Garkone, the celebrations will continue at Dha-Bema and Garkone on April 9, Darchiks on April 10, Karkitchoo on April 12, Turtuk on April 13, Tyakshi on April 14, Minjee on April 15, and will conclude at Kyagar on April 16.
