SRINAGAR, Aug 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Apple Farmers Federation has expressed serious concern over the continuous blockade of the national highway following the recent spell of bad weather, saying the disruption is inflicting heavy losses on orchardists.
Federation President Zahoor Ahmad Rather said truckloads of ripened apple varieties are stranded on the route for days, with fruits beginning to rot inside vehicles.
He claimed apple is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and every day of delay means huge financial losses for growers.
Urging authorities to ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement of fruit trucks, Rather demanded that apple-laden vehicles be given priority for clearance once the highway is reopened so that the hard work of farmers does not go to waste.
