Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my deep resentment towards the appalling way in which JEE-MAIN 2016 was conducted in one of the schools in Jammu city.
On April 3, 2016, my younger brother took JEE-MAIN examination in a school named “SOS Herman Gmeiner School” in Jammu. As it was clearly mentioned on the admit cards, my brother did not take his wrist watch to theexamination hall. To quote the instructions in the admit card:
“ All the Examination Hall/Room will be having Wall clock so the candidates are not allowed to wear/carry any type of watch in the examination hall/room”
So, it was expected that the students will get a wall clock in the hall. However, in spite of this clear rule, the school did not have any wall clock in the room. Before the exam started, my brother inquired about the same thing from the invigilator, and he was told that if students need to know the time, they should ask the invigilator.
I am highly disappointed by such a dismal state of affairs at this school. I strongly want to emphasize here that unlike board examinations, exams like JEE-MAIN and ADVANCED heavily require a student to manage time very efficiently. From my personal experience when I cleared IIT-JEE in 2012, I know how important it is to keep track of time in such exams. To excel in these, time management is almost as important as having the skills to solve the problems. Every problem in the booklet has to be solved in at most 2 minutes. Given the fact that these problems are non-trivial, I think it is quite clear that not having access to a watch at all times is quite detrimental to a student’s performance, even if the student is academically brilliant.
This reckless attitude of the school authorities towards the JEE exam shows how casually such matters are taken in some CBSE schools. I am sure that CBSE would have played its part by informing the school about installing a clock in every room. But it did not happen.
I would really appreciate if this matter is not ignored by CBSE. No school has the right to stop a student from achieving his/her goals, but this incident is a very sad instance when such a thing has occurred. I request the Board to look into the matter, and take serious action against this school for the audacious attitude it has shown towards the students’ career.
Yours etc….
