JAMMU, Feb 17: The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Jammu today claimed they have arrested an absconding accused in a 2023 NDPS case from the State of Maharashtra.
An ANTF official said the arrest was made in connection with FIR number 09/2023 registered under sections 8/20/29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station ANTF Jammu.
The accused has been identified as Arif Ibrahim Sayyed, a resident of Mubra area of Thane District in Maharashtra.
According to the ANTF official, he was wanted as a co-accused in the backward linkage of the case and had been evading arrest for the last 2-3 years.
He said that during the investigation, evidence surfaced about Sayyed’s alleged involvement in the narcotics supply chain linked to the case.
Accordingly, arrest warrants under section 24 of the Police Act were obtained from the Sub Judge Court, Jammu, to secure his presence before the law.
The ANTF official said that acting on specific inputs about his location, a team of ANTF Jammu rushed to Mumbra, where the accused was apprehended on February 14 after sustained tracking and surveillance with the help of NDPS police team in Thane.
Post arrest, the accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thane, from where the ANTF Jammu obtained transit remand as per the legal procedure, he said.
“He is being brought to Jammu for further investigation,” he said, adding that further investigation is underway in the case to identify other associates and uncover more links in the drug trafficking chain.
The arrest is considered significant towards dismantling the inter-state narcotics network linked to the case.
