KARGIL, June 6 : The announcement to make Purig as official language of Ladakh is a historic decision and it will end the stalemate on speculations about the official language of the Union Territory.
This was stated by Kacho Ahmed Khan, president of Purig Cultural and Literary Society (PCLS) in a press conference held here today.
Purig being the second largest spoken language of Ladakh as per census 2011, had not been officially recognised so far. Now it has been given its due status by the Government of India through its official Gazette.
Addressing the conference, Kacho welcomed the decision and termed it historic for the people of the Kargil region.
He said, “this decision would immensely benefit the Purig speaking majority population of Ladakh for promotion and preservation of their age old Socio-cultural heritage for future generations.”
“On behalf of people of Ladakh, I wanted to express gratitude to Prime Minister of India, Home Minister, Lieutenant Governor UT Ladakh, LAHDC Kargil, MP Ladakh, Chief Secretary UT Ladakh, Socio-religious organizations, local literary organisations, Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Kargil for their valuable contributions in making Purig as the official language of Ladakh,” said Kacho.
He further said that it is a moment of jubilation for the whole Purig population and this move will help preserving the linguistic heritage for future generations.
It’s pertinent to mention that PCLS has immensely contributed to promote and preserve local Purig language and succeeded to follow the registration of Purig as one of the official languages of Ladakh after due consultations with Government Institutions and other relevant agencies.
“Now, it’s the need of the hour that Government should take concrete steps to institutionalize the language and take necessary steps to promote Purig language,” he added.
