JAMMU, Mar 22: In a concerted effort to combat anemia among rural women, children and adolescents, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Jammu, JK National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and NGO SUPPORT launched the ‘Anemia Mukt Bharat’ campaign in Pakkhian Mishriwala of Bhalwal Block.
The initiative, aligned with the national Anemia Mukt Bharat strategy, focuses on prevention and treatment through the distribution of iron-folic acid supplements, deworming, and fortified foods, as well as screening and diagnosis via free hemoglobin testing camps in underserved areas. Community awareness efforts emphasize education on nutrition, menstrual hygiene, and dietary diversity.
The campaign was inaugurated by Dr Navneet Kaur, a noted social reformer of J&K and founder chairperson of NGO support, who played a key role in organizing the event in collaboration with Government institutions. A free medical camp was held at Sukka Pakhian Anganwadi Centre, where expert doctors and paramedics conducted anemia screenings, general health check-ups, and consultations.
The initiative saw participation from key stakeholders, including CMO Jammu Dr Harbaksh Singh, who led medical interventions with support from ASHA and Anganwadi workers. JK NRLM, under BPM Shruti Uppal, mobilized Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to integrate anemia awareness into livelihood programs, promoting kitchen gardens and nutrient-rich diets. NGO support facilitated awareness programs, dietary counseling, and community engagement, while SDH Kot Bhalwal, Rotary Club Bahu, MHSF, and ISBTI extended healthcare and logistical support.
Recent screenings in Mishriwala Block revealed 122 anemic women, including 65 from Sukka Pakhian village alone, and 33 young children, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions.
Dr. Harbaksh Singh emphasized the importance of prioritizing awareness and healthcare access to improve health outcomes for women and girls.
