Amid uncertain future, Ford workers restart EcoSport production for exports

Chennai, Sep 18: Amid uncertain future with the company deciding to shut down its Chennai facility, Ford India workers has re-commenced the production of EcoSport model to meet the export commitments.
The company has an export commitment of about 30,000 cars to be delivered by the end of this year.
According to trade union office-bearers, production at the Chennai plant is on as per schedule. However, the per day count of roll out of cars will differ as it depends on the production schedule, they said.
Since the company has a commitment to export about 30,000 cars by the end of this year, the management has requested the workers to restart production and promised to hold talks on its decision to shut down Chennai plant at Maraimalainagar in the second quarter of 2022.
The management held two round of talks with the trade union members which did not make any headway.
Chief Minister M K Stalin and Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu also held discussions over the closure decision and the impact it would on its employees, who have been facing an uncertain future.
The Chennai facility is the sole manufacturer of Ecosport model sold in the US and the Aspire and Figo models sold in Mexico and South Africa.
Earlier, the company used to make Endeavour models at Chennai but has stopped production recently.
The workers involved in the making of Endeavour were asked not to come to the plant for a week, sources said. (UNI)
