JAMMU, Feb 16: The District Administration Rajouri has sounded alert as at least 230 cases of typhoid and 43 cases of diarrhoea have been detected in the district in last three weeks.
Reports said that due to this epidemic, most of the children from Rajouri town have been affected. The highest number of children from Bela Colony, Kheora, Ward No. 7 and 8 of Rajouri town have been trapped in the grip of typhoid while 43 fresh cases of diarrhoea have been detected in Darhal.
A medical team led by Block Medical Officer, Darhal Dr Iqbal today camped at Panchayat Ghar of village Topa (Sagad) in Darhal tehsil where these cases of water borne disease were reported. The medical team also took water samples and sent for testing to the laboratory. The doctors who examined the patients at Topa village indicated that water being supplied to the population from the PHE tank of the area was not hygienic and problem has been caused due to impure water.
Medical Superintendant of District Hospital, Rajouri Dr Mehmood when contacted said that in last three weeks a total 231 cases of this epidemic have been reported in District Hospital. While many went to their homes after taking medicine and treatment, 130 were admitted. He said most of the patients were children and they were suffering from high fever. Tests of the blood samples were performed and after positive results, they were put on treatment. He said three Child specialists were there in the District Hospital and they used to receive at least 14 to 15 cases every day.
Chief Medical Officer, Rajouri Dr Rajiv Sharma disclosed that more and more cases are reporting to the District Hospital from the town and other villages. He said that administration has already put the Medical staff and people on alert. This problem has caused due to unhygienic water supply.
Dr Sharma said that matter was also taken up with the Deputy Commissioner Rajouri who has directed the PHE authorities in Rajouri to improve water quality or face action. He said the water samples have been taken by the department and sent for testing to the labs. The other reasons are also being explored for the outbreak of this epidemic.
The CMO said that department was closely monitoring the cases but for the last few days some reduction has been witnessed. The PHE authorities claimed to have added more chlorine tablets in the water tanks and the people have been asked to take all the precautions. He further claimed that at Topa village of Darhal medical team has been rushed to control the outbreak of diarrhoea.
