JAMMU, Sept 1: In a remarkable show of unity and environmental responsibility, residents of Akhnoor came together on the banks of the Chenab to strengthen defenses against recurring landslides, erosion and flash floods.
The initiative was spearheaded by social entrepreneur Neetu Kaur Bali in collaboration with the management of Gurudwara Tapostan Baba Sunder Singh Ji, Akhnoor. Key participants included DGPC Joint Secretary Ranvir Singh, Ajit Singh, Mohinder Singh, Inderpal Singh, Harbans Singh, Narinder Singh and members of the society “Oxygen Footprints” such as Harneet Singh and Dr Randhir Singh. Dedicated volunteers joined hands to expand green cover across multiple sites.
The campaign began with special prayers for victims of recent natural disasters, embodying the Sikh spirit of ‘Chardi Kalah’-optimism and resilience. Organizers also drew attention to the Sikh teaching on environmental harmony from Guru Granth Sahib: “Pawan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat” (Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother).
Speaking at the event, Bali stressed the urgency of collective efforts: “Planting trees is not just about the environment-it is about saving lives. This initiative is a testament to community action and positive thinking, helping us look forward to better times.”
Carrying the message “Plant Trees, Prevent Floods, Save Nature, Save Lives”, the effort attracted support from diverse organizations, transforming it into a community-wide movement.
With flash floods and environmental crises intensifying in the region, organizers expressed hope that such initiatives will inspire more citizens to embrace sustainable solutions. The program not only demonstrated the strength of people’s collective will but also reaffirmed that grassroots action can lead to a safer, greener, and more resilient future for Jammu and Kashmir.
