Aizawl nurse honoured with Florence Nightingale Award for exceptional service

AIZWAL, May 30: V. Lalhmangaihi, a senior nursing officer at the Aizawl Civil Hospital, has been conferred the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on Friday.

The National Florence Nightingale Award recognises exemplary contributions made by nursing professionals across India.
According to a press release from the Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Department, Lalhmangaihi was selected for her unwavering dedication in handling critical medical emergencies, often accompanying patients requiring urgent care outside the state without any additional financial compensation.
Among her notable acts of service, Lalhmangaihi once saved a cancer patient whose breathing tube had become blocked. She also came to the rescue of a medical officer who collapsed from exhaustion while trekking to the remote Vartekkai village in Lawngtlai district, located near the Myanmar and Bangladesh border.
A pioneer in critical care nursing, Lalhmangaihi played a key role when Mizoram set up its first Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Civil Hospital, Aizawl. She was later deployed to various locations where ICUs were being established, training nurses and assisting in drafting the ICU operational manual.
