AMRAVATI, Feb 8: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has expelled its corporator Meera Kamble after she voted in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate in the Amravati Municipal Corporation mayoral election.
AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel said on Sunday the party, which secured 12 seats in the civic body elections, had collectively decided to stay neutral during the mayor and deputy mayor polls conducted on Friday. Despite this decision, Kamble openly backed BJP nominee Shreechand Tejwani by raising her hand during the voting process, he said.
Terming her action as a violation of party discipline, Jaleel stated that AIMIM has not only removed Kamble from the party but has also begun proceedings to have her disqualified as a corporator.
Additionally, show-cause notices have been issued to several party leaders and office-bearers in Amravati in connection with the incident.
Following the elections, BJP’s Shreechand Tejwani was elected mayor, while Sachin Onkarrao Bhende of Ravi Rana-led Yuva Swabhiman Party secured the deputy mayor’s post in the 87-member civic body.
Among the Mahayuti alliance partners, the BJP holds 25 seats, while the Yuva Swabhiman Party has 15 corporators in the Amravati Municipal Corporation.
