JAMMU, May 23: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vijaypur, Jammu, has successfully conducted a trial run of its newly established Blood Centre services through an internal blood donation drive, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, medical staff, administrative personnel, and support teams.
The blood donation camp, organized to assess the operational preparedness of the facility, received an overwhelming response from the AIIMS community. Among the early donors were Dr Vijay Kundal, Col Sanjay Garg, Jitendra Goswami, Dr Sartaj, Dr Amit Chaudhary, Monika Rohilla, Anil Bhat, Vikas Yadav, Prashant Kumar, Ritika Garg, Pushpinder, and several others.
Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “The successful trial affirmed the Institute’s capability to provide safe, quality-assured blood products while adhering to national and international standards. This Centre will be instrumental in ensuring timely and safe blood availability-not just at AIIMS, but also for other healthcare institutions across the region, especially during emergencies.”
The Blood Centre, under the leadership of Dr Urvershi Kotwal, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine, is equipped with state-of-the-art collection, processing, and storage systems. The trial run yielded several key outcomes: notably high participation from faculty and staff, efficient execution of blood collection and storage protocols, rigorous screening ensuring safety and quality, and commendable coordination among medical and technical teams.
In addition to showcasing the Centre’s operational readiness, the drive laid the foundation for a broader vision of community engagement. AIIMS Vijaypur now plans to expand its efforts by initiating regular blood donation drives and awareness campaigns in collaboration with educational institutions, corporate bodies, NGOs, and social organizations.
“Our aim is to foster a culture of voluntary blood donation throughout the region,” said Dr Sushant Kumar Meinia, Assistant Professor and coordinator of the voluntary blood donation drive, underscoring the institution’s commitment to building a self-sustaining ecosystem of blood availability and community health awareness.
