SRINAGAR, May 30: Government today clarified that the proposed site for the establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Awantipora in South Kashmir doesn’t fall under firing range of Army.
Replying to supplementary question raised by National Conference (NC) MLC, Shehnaz Ganai, in Upper House about the firing range, the Health and Medical Education Minister, Bali Bhagat said the Government of India (GoI) had raised similar query. “However the site doesn’t come under firing range,” he added.
Earlier, replying to the question of MLC Surinder Mohan Ambardar, the Minister said an amount of Rs. 2000 crore each has been earmarked under Prime Minister’s package programme for setting up two AIIMS, one each at Kashmir and Jammu.
He said the land measuring 221 acres at Awantipora in Kashmir and 232 acres at Vijaypur in Samba has been identified for these two AIIMS. He further informed that the Centre has approved the proposed sites on May 27, 2016. The Minister said that inspection of these two sites has also been conducted through the central teams constituted by GoI.
Replying to the query about the time frame to construct both the institutes and subsequent functioning, the Minister said that the projects are to be executed by the GoI and time frames in this regard are to be intimated to the State Government.
Replying to the supplementary question of the MLC Ambardar regarding posting of doctors and other paramedical staff in these two AIIMS, the Minister said that Centre has to see the posting of staff but added that other requirements including water and power would be fulfilled by the State Government.
