JAMMU, May 24: AIIMS Jammu is set to significantly strengthen maternal and child healthcare in the region with the launch of a dedicated Maternal and Fetal Medicine (MFM) unit under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
This specialized facility will provide expert care during complicated pregnancies, making AIIMS Jammu one of the select hospitals in India offering comprehensive MFM services.
Maternal and Fetal Medicine specialists are trained to manage high-risk pregnancies, using advanced techniques to closely monitor the health of both mother and baby. The new unit will focus on early screening and management of complications such as pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and preterm labor. Specialized ultrasound scans will help track fetal development and guide timely interventions.
Key diagnostic services will include Nuchal Translucency (NT) scans between 11–14 weeks of pregnancy to detect chromosomal conditions and anomaly scans between 18–22 weeks to assess the baby’s developing organs. The MFM unit will also collaborate with the newly established Centre for Advanced Genomics & Precision Medicine at AIIMS Jammu. This partnership will enhance the unit’s ability to offer precise genetic testing when screenings suggest potential abnormalities.
Parents will be offered diagnostic options like Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) between 11–14 weeks or Amniocentesis after 15 weeks if needed, enabling early and informed decision-making.
Dr Vishakha Gupta, MFM specialist at AIIMS Jammu, stated, “Our goal is to provide world-class, compassionate care for expectant mothers. Advanced ultrasound and genetic collaboration will allow for timely detection and support throughout the pregnancy.”
Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, added, “this unit reflects our commitment to precision healthcare. By integrating cutting-edge fetal medicine and genomics, we aim to ensure better outcomes for mothers and babies in Jammu and Kashmir.”
