JAMMU, June 11: A 28-year-old man from Jammu, who suddenly lost hearing in his right ear, has made a full recovery after timely treatment at AIIMS Jammu. The patient had no pain but experienced a sudden loss of hearing along with a constant ringing sound — symptoms of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL), a rare and urgent ear condition.
Under the leadership of Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu continues to deliver high-quality medical care. The patient was promptly evaluated by a multidisciplinary team from the ENT and Audiology Departments, led by senior doctors Dr Darwin Kaushal and Dr Amardeep Singh.
After clinical and audiological assessment, the patient was diagnosed with SSNHL and treated with intratympanic dexamethasone injections — a steroid delivered directly to the middle ear to reduce inflammation. The treatment involved five carefully timed sessions over a week. His hearing gradually improved and was fully restored by the end of therapy.
Supporting the case were ENT residents Dr Pooja, Dr Youshita, Dr Shivane, Dr Muskan and Dr Gunjan, along with audiologists Nityansh Saluja, Akshita Gupta and Reyaz Ahmad.
AIIMS Jammu’s ENT Department is equipped to manage such emergencies and also offers advanced surgeries including tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy and cochlear implants. It serves as a referral center for complex ENT cases, supported by modern audiological and surgical facilities.
The Department is also involved in research. Dr Muskan Rao, under Dr Kaushal’s guidance, is conducting a Randomized Controlled Trial comparing two steroid treatments for SSNHL.
AIIMS Jammu advises the public to be alert to early signs of SSNHL such as sudden ear blockage, tinnitus, hearing loss, or vertigo. Experts stress that the first 72 hours are critical for treatment success.
