JAMMU, Dec 9: AIIMS Jammu organized a comprehensive CME-cum-simulation workshop on Obstetric Anaesthesia centred on the theme “Preventing the Preventable,” bringing together leading experts, residents, postgraduate trainees and more than 70 delegates from medical institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
The initiative, led by the Department of Anaesthesiology, aimed to strengthen maternal safety protocols by combining academic dialogue with immersive simulation-based clinical training.
The scientific deliberations featured eminent national faculty, including Prof Kajal Jain, Prof Anju Grewal and Dr Soumya Sarkar from PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS Bathinda. Their sessions offered detailed insights into evolving standards of labour analgesia, assessment of high-risk obstetric cases, the requirements of modern neonatal resuscitation environments and structured perioperative planning essential for safer maternal outcomes.
Their expertise was complemented by Dr Manokanth Madapu of Fernandez Hospitals, Hyderabad. Dr Meeta Gupta from AIIMS Jammu discussed key considerations for intrapartum anaesthesia in resource-variable settings while Dr Renu Wakhloo from GMC Jammu highlighted region-specific maternal risk factors and the contextual demands of emergency obstetric care networks.
Delegates and faculty from GMC Jammu, GMC Kathua, GMC Rajouri, GMC Udhampur, ASCOMS, SMVDU College of Nursing and other health institutions enriched the interdisciplinary exchange, ensuring participation across multiple training tiers and service frameworks.
The scientific programme blended structured theoretical instruction with high-fidelity simulation modules, allowing participants to engage with complex maternal emergencies such as postpartum haemorrhage, obstetric airway challenges, delayed recognition of anaesthetic complications and coordinated multi-team response mechanisms.
Executive Director and CEO, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, emphasized that the workshop’s theme reflects a committed effort towards safe motherhood and reduction of preventable maternal mortality. He noted that simulation-driven training significantly enhances clinical judgement and team coordination.
The workshop was meticulously curated by the Department of Anaesthesiology, with Dr Sunana Gupta as organizing chairperson and Dr Shruti Sharma as organizing co-chairperson. They were supported by scientific committee chairperson Dr Raksha Kundal, organizing secretary Dr Sandeepika Dogra, co-secretary Dr Kanika Gupta, and simulation committee members Dr Slomi Gupta and Dr Aleesha Gupta.
