JAMMU, Aug 1: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu marked its first anniversary of public service today, celebrating a year of impactful healthcare delivery, academic excellence and infrastructural milestones.
Commissioned in August 2024, AIIMS Jammu has swiftly developed into a comprehensive multispecialty tertiary care institute. Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) for making quality healthcare and medical education accessible across regions. He described AIIMS Jammu as more than just a hospital—“a beacon of hope, knowledge, and compassionate care” for future generations.
In its inaugural year, the Institute has treated over 2.6 lakh OPD patients, admitted around 4,000 inpatients, managed more than 15,000 emergency cases, and successfully performed 1,800+ surgeries in eight modular operation theatres. Its diagnostic wing completed over 30,000 X-rays, 20,000 ultrasounds, 7,000 CT scans, and 2,300 MRIs — all within a year.
AIIMS Jammu also became the first among the new AIIMS institutions to set up a full-fledged Transfusion Medicine Unit and introduced the region’s first Green Smart Waterless Lab. Advanced facilities like the Centre for Genomics and Precision Medicine have eliminated the need to send genomic samples abroad, while the Oncology unit now offers chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy services locally.
Several patient-centric innovations have been introduced, including the AIIMS Indoor Navigation App, Rogi Sahayak Mitra system, Swasthya App for appointments and diagnostics, and mobility services like ‘Parikrama Seva’ e-carts. A dedicated AYUSH screening wing ensures that walk-in patients receive appropriate guidance and care.
Academically, the Institute has expanded its MBBS intake from 50 to 100 students, and launched B.Sc. Nursing, MD/MS, MDS, and MCh in Paediatric Surgery. The digital library boasts access to over 13,000 e-journals and the 1,000-seat Convention Centre has already hosted multiple national-level conferences.
AIIMS Jammu is also actively engaging in research, with 130+ ongoing projects and partnerships with global and national institutions including the University of Alabama, IIT Jammu, IIM Jammu and CSIR-IIIM.
Highlighting infrastructure achievements, Dr Gupta noted that 43 buildings were completed in record time despite pandemic-related delays, with project execution recognized nationally at the CPWD Annual Day.
Looking ahead, AIIMS Jammu is envisioned as a “Global Village” with Centres of Excellence in Oncology, Robotic Surgery, Telemedicine, and Dentistry. Proposals for further expansion over 100 additional acres are also underway.
Laid on February 3, 2019, the institute was inaugurated by PM Modi on February 20, 2024, and has since earned accolades from various dignitaries for setting new benchmarks in healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
