Day temp rises in Jammu, 3 flights hit

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Jan 20: The minimum temperature dropped at most places across Kashmir today as the region braces up for rain and snow this week, while the day temperature in Jammu has started rising as the sun-shine is being witnessed for the last three days in the region.

The plains of Kashmir have remained snowless so far this winter while the hills have received spells of snowfall. However, the Meteorological Department has forecast a possibility of snowfall in the plains of the Valley, including Srinagar, this week.
“Two western disturbances are likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir in quick succession during January 22-24 and 26-28,” the MeT office said.
“Under the influence of these systems, widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall is expected, with heavy falls at a few places and the main activity on January 23 and 27,” it said.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius last night, down from the minus 1.2 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The tourist resort of Sonamarg in Ganderbal district registered a low of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius and was the coldest recorded place in the Valley. Shopian and Pulwama recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees and minus 5.5 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius -down from the previous night’s minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in the popular ski resort of Gulmarg settled at a low of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius – two degrees down from the previous night.
The minimum temperature in Qazigund settled at minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.
However, day temperatures across the region stayed several notches as it was a sunny day in Kashmir.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 12.5 degree Celsius, Qazigund 13.8 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 9.0 degree Celsius, Kupwara 11.8 degree Celsius, Kokernag 12.2 degree Celsius and Gulmarg 2.0 degree Celsius. It was 5.7 degree Celsius, 7.5 degree Celsius, 4.4 degree Celsius, 4.5 degree Celsius, 7.2 degree Celsius and 1.7 degree Celsius above normal respectively for these places.
The winter capital Jammu today recorded a day temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius, about 5.7 deg above normal while the night temperature was 7.4 deg C.
Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a maximum temperature of 21.2 deg C and minimum 7.4 deg C; Reasi a night temperature of 3.8 deg C, Udhampur town a minimum temperature of 0.8 deg C; Doda 2.8 deg, Kishtwar 2.3 deg, Ramban 3.1, Rajouri 0.6 while Samba town a night temperature of 0.4 degrees C on Tuesday.
Tourist spot Bhaderwah in Jammu region registered a minimum temperature of -1.2 deg C and maximum 13.2 deg; Batote a minimum temperature of 2.5 deg and maximum 14.6 deg while Banihal town registered a night temperature of 2.5 and day temperature of 14.4 deg C today.
An Airport official at Jammu said that today the weather was mostly clear during the day over Jammu and total 28 flights operated. However, due to some restrictions in the Union capital area, one flight was cancelled. Two IndiGo flights operating between Mumbai-Jammu-Srinagar and Delhi- Jammu-Srinagar were delayed today.
Meanwhile, Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, 40 days of extreme cold during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below the freezing point and the chances of snowfall are the highest. ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, which began on December 21 last year, ends on January 30.
