After auto seizure, driver attempts suicide

JAMMU, Oct 6: An auto-rickshaw driver today made an abortive bid on his life in Bohri area of city outskirts after his vehicle was seized by traffic police for violating rules under new Motor Vehicles Act.
According to the reports, the auto driver namely Sanjay Kumar son of Om Parkash, resident of Colonel Colony, Talab Tillo this afternoon made a bid on his life on the spot after his auto was seized by traffic police for violating rules in Patta Bohri area.
Police sources said that the auto driver was intercepted by traffic police at Bohri Chowk and he was asked to show documents pertaining to the vehicle but he failed to show any document except a challan slip (done earlier) which was also tampered by him as he had not produce himself in the court.
Sources said, as the auto driver failed to produce any document before the traffic police, the men in blue seized his vehicle following which he exchanged heated words with traffic cops, misbehaved with them and lastly in a fit of anger, he purchased a bottle of “phenyl” from a nearby shop and allegedly consumed it in full public view.
The flying squad of police immediately rushed the auto driver to the Government Medical College and Hospital where doctors treated him and his condition was stated to be stable now. Meanwhile, local shopkeepers later staged a brief protest against traffic police, alleging harassment.
When contacted, Additional SP Traffic, Jammu City, Prabhu Dayal, said that there is no truth in what people are alleging that the auto driver was fined Rs 25000. He said the traffic cops sought documents of his vehicle but he failed to produce any document and instead started misbehaving with cops on duty after which his vehicle was seized.
He said we have got registered a complaint in concern police station against the auto driver for his suicide bid and misbehaving with cops on duty.
