That a contractor was threatened to have his tender cancelled if he would not grease the palms of the chairperson of Municipal Committee of south Kashmir’s Qazigund town in Anantnag district which he did but the ”beneficiary” was caught on camera which has appeared in papers too, is indignantly astonishing . The contractor had to undergo bouts of severe pestering and for several months from the Chairperson even though he had been ”following laid down rules ” and he was compelled to pay the amount to her and have the entire ”episode” recorded.
The Chairperson has not been arrested as yet though the Deputy Commissioner has assured to have the matter ”inquired into” so that action could be taken against her accordingly. Elected representatives from the grass root levels supposed to serve the people and see the area was developed and municipal services provided satisfactorily indulging in open corruption from contractors for various works etc is deplorable and requiring immediate action under rules.
