JAMMU, May 23: In a landmark achievement, the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, has successfully performed a highly advanced laparoscopic pediatric urology procedure – Partial upper moiety nephroureterectomy – on a 9-month-old infant diagnosed with a duplex kidney system (two ureters) with non-functional half kidney.
The non-functional half of the kidney along with its dilated ureter was removed laparoscopically. The surgical procedure was accomplished in 2 hours and the child was discharged on the third day of surgery. The procedure did not leave any big scar and more importantly the functional lower half of the kidney was saved.
Such an advanced laparoscopic pediatric urological procedure has been performed first time on an infant of this age in Jammu. The surgery was led by Dr Saalim Nazki, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, and was assisted by Dr Shahzada Faisal (Registrar) and Dr Danish (Postgraduate).
The anesthesia team, critical to the success of the procedure, included Dr Lovleen Kaur and Dr Esha Gupta, along with registrars and postgraduate trainees from the Department of Anesthesiology. The operation theatre technical team included Rakesh Kumar and Zaheer Abbas, whose efficient support ensured the smooth execution of the surgery. The child was taken well care postoperatively in PICU by the pediatric team.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Saalim Nazki stated, “This is a big achievement for the Department of Pediatric Surgery. Performing such an advanced laparoscopic urological procedure in a child of such young age is a major milestone, not only for our department but for pediatric surgical care in the region.”
