LEH, Apr 20: A hunger strike by Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), led primarily by wheelchair users, came to an end today following assurances from district administration officials regarding their key demands.
In a press briefing held in Leh, Deputy Chairman Tsering Angchuk, DC/CEO LAHDC Leh Santosh Sukhadeve and SSP Leh Shruti Arora addressed the media in the presence of LBA Youth Wing president Jigmet Raftan, PAGIR president Tsewang Dorjey, and member Padma Stanzin.
The protesting PwDs had been on a hunger strike, calling for a comprehensive disability-inclusive policy, proper representation in governance structures, job reservations specifically for wheelchair users, and improved accessibility in public spaces and Government buildings.
During the briefing, the Deputy Chairman announced that a meeting would be convened within a week to take up the concerns raised by the protestors. He assured that all executive members and relevant district officers would participate in the meeting to explore district-level measures aimed at addressing the demands.
Santosh Sukhadeve stated that the administration is actively working to resolve license-related issues in coordination with the ARTO and transport department. He further emphasized that accessibility in public and Government spaces will be prioritized, with inclusivity being a central component of upcoming development projects. Modifications to existing infrastructure will also be considered to ensure they are disability-friendly.
As a sign of goodwill and commitment to the cause, the Deputy Chairman, DC, and SSP offered juices to the protestors. Following the gesture and the assurances provided, the protestors decided to conclude their hunger strike.
