He emphasized that the overall situation in Kashmir has shown considerable improvement, making it appropriate to reconsider the ban on these religious processions.
Speaking to media persons during the inauguration of a water distribution stall arranged by the NGO ‘Who is Hussain,’ the Mayor requested LG Manoj Sinha to consider the matter urgently and allow the Muharram processions to take place on the 8th and 10th of the Islamic month of Muharram.
“I have officially appealed to the LG, and if the current situation reflects normalcy, then there should be no reason to halt the pre-89 Muharram processions on the traditional routes in Srinagar. We must ask ourselves, why do we stop them? Are we suggesting that the situation is both fine and not fine simultaneously?” he questioned, highlighting the importance of revisiting the ban in light of the improved conditions.
The Mayor further asserted that the decision regarding the resumption of the processions rests with the district administration and the district police, stressing that this is a religious matter that deserves the utmost respect and consideration.
It is to be noted here that the Muharram processions, once a customary part of Old Srinagar’s cultural and religious fabric, have been suspended for several years due to security concerns.
