JAMMU, Mar 5: A brief scare gripped the DPS Lane at Shaheedi Chowk area here today after acid was allegedly thrown in the open during the clearing of a hardware store, causing irritation in the eyes and breathing difficulties among nearby residents.
Official sources said the incident occurred when a hardware shop in the lane was being emptied and some quantity of acid was reportedly discarded in the open.
Soon after, people living in the vicinity complained of irritation in the eyes and breathing discomfort due to the strong fumes, prompting locals to raise an alarm.
On receiving information, teams from Fire and Emergency Services, SDRF, Jammu and Kashmir Police and JMC rushed to the spot and initiated measures to control the situation.
The area was secured and the chemical was handled as per safety protocols to prevent any further impact on the public.
“Around the time the shop was being cleared, acid was thrown in the open which led to irritation among nearby residents. After receiving the information, the concerned teams immediately reached the spot and took necessary measures to neutralise and remove the chemical safely,” a police official said.
The official added that the situation was brought under control and the affected material was shifted to a safer location by evening.
Authorities said no injuries were reported and the area was later normalised after the intervention of the response teams.
