ANANTNAG, Dec 26: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested a clerk of the Rural Engineering Wing (RDD), Anantnag, for demanding and accepting a bribe.
The accused has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Ahanger, a clerk in the RDD office at Anantnag.
An ACB official said the anti-corruption agency received a written complaint stating that the complainant’s father had constructed an irrigation Ladh.
He said after completion of the work, the bill was submitted and forwarded to the RDD office.
“It was alleged that the concerned clerk demanded a bribe for releasing the payment,” he said.
The ACB official added that the complainant refused to pay the bribe and instead approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau for legal action.
Acting on the complaint, he said, a discreet verification was conducted, which confirmed the demand of bribe by the government employee.
Subsequently, FIR number 06/2025 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 was registered at Police Station ACB Anantnag, and an investigation was initiated, he said.
During the investigation, a trap team was constituted, he said, adding that the team successfully caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe.
He was accordingly arrested on-the-spot, and the bribe amount was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses, the ACB official said.
Later, the residential house of the accused was also searched in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses, he said.
Meanwhile, further investigation in the case is underway.
