ACB arrests JE accepting Rs 75,000 bribe

JAMMU, Apr 5: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Junior Engineer (JE) of JPDCL posted in Katra from Jammu district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 75,000 in lieu of replacing an electric meter and reducing the monthly electricity bill.
An ACB spokesperson said that the accused public servant, identified as Anirudh Sharma of Mohalla Sultanpura, Janipur, Jammu, has been booked in case FIR number 07/2026 under section 07 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 registered at Police Station ACB Udhampur.

He said the accused was arrested after a complaint was received alleging that the accused public servant was demanding illegal gratification for replacing an electric meter and reducing the monthly electricity bill.
Accordingly, he said, a discreet verification conducted by ACB confirmed the allegations, following which a formal case was registered and investigation was taken up.
During the investigation, a trap team headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) ranked officer was constituted, the ACB spokesperson said.
The team laid a successful trap and caught the accused red-handed from near Laxminarayan Temple, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, while accepting Rs 75,000 as the first installment of the bribe in the presence of independent witnesses, he said.
The ACB official added that the accused was arrested on-the-spot after completing all the legal formalities, and the bribe amount was recovered from his possession.
Later, he said, a search was also conducted at his residence in Janipur in the presence of a Magistrate.
Further investigation in the case is underway, the spokesperson added.
