ACB arrests HC for taking Rs 5,000 bribe

JAMMU, Mar 9: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today claimed to have trapped and arrested a Head Constable (HC) posted at Police Post Talwara in Reasi district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant.
The accused has been identified as Head Constable Parvaiz Ahmed Bhati, a resident of Mandhar in Poonch district, who was serving as the Investigating Officer at Police Post Talwara.

According to ACB, the accused had demanded the bribe from the complainant for manipulating the investigation and dropping certain sections of law in a case registered against him at the police post.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the ACB, which conducted a discreet verification that confirmed the demand, an ACB official said.
Subsequently, he said, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered at Police Station ACB Udhampur.
During the investigation, a trap team headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe in the presence of independent witnesses, the ACB official said.
He said the accused was arrested on the spot and the bribe money was recovered from his possession.
Meanwhile, the ACB also conducted a search at the accused’s residential quarter at Talwara in the presence of a Magistrate, with further investigation in the case set into the motion.
