JAMMU, Sept 5: The Jammu University (JU) unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly condemned what it termed as “anti-student policies” of the University authorities, particularly the decision to impose a 10% hike in admission fees every year across all departments.
The student body said it was “extremely unfortunate” that instead of working for student welfare and ensuring affordable higher education, the University has been burdening students and their families with unjustified financial policies. It alleged that the same 10% hike has been applied to hostel admissions as well, making basic facilities like accommodation unaffordable for students coming from far-flung areas.

ABVP JU vice president, Amit Sadotra, asserted that the University is framing its policies with a “profit-making mindset” rather than adopting a student-centric approach. He said such measures exploit the academic future of students while putting unnecessary economic pressure on their parents. “The 10% hike introduced by the Academic Council clearly reflects this exploitative nature, as it escalates the cost of education every year without any matching improvement in facilities, infrastructure, or academic quality,” he said.
ABVP maintained that education is a right and a means to empower the youth, not a commodity to be commercialized. “Under the current administration, education in JU is being turned into a business, where students are treated as sources of revenue rather than learners and future nation-builders,” the statement added.
The student outfit demanded an immediate rollback of the 10% fee hike policy in admissions and hostels. It also urged the University authorities to frame policies focusing on accessibility, affordability and academic excellence instead of commercialization. ABVP warned that if the administration continues to ignore the students’ concerns, it will be compelled to launch a massive agitation inside the campus.
Reiterating its support, ABVP said it firmly stands with the JU students and will continue its struggle until the “exploitative” fee hike policy is withdrawn.
