Sir,
This has reference to the article ‘End financial abuse of older persons’ DE June 15.
The author deserves kudos for highlighting an issue that is not given much importance these days. There is no doubt that with changing values, and lifestyle, our elder people are at the receiving end. The senior citizens are bearing the brunt of modern, fast paced life and there shall be no let up in the coming times too. Rather situation is worsening day by day. The nuclearisation of families has almost toppled the older order of joint families where older people enjoyed a special status and were taken care of with respect and dignity during their last days. Now, no one has time to devote it to their old aged parents or elders. Though Government has enacted some laws to safeguard the interest of this community, these will not succeed unless people or the concerned ones have their inner voice alive.
The Government itself seems quite callous towards this community. We see older people standing in long queues in banks treasuries and other public places to get their salary or works done. No one shows any compassion towards them to wait for getting their pensionary benefits.
Unless society as a whole understands this issue, our senior citizens shall continue to suffer.
Yours etc…
