Zojila tunnel, with an estimated cost of Rs.6800 crore , when built, holds the ‘promise’ of providing round the year connectivity between the Union Territories of Jammu – Kashmir and Ladakh. It had , however, to undergo certain hiccups for six years due to which no headway could be achieved for starting its construction. 14.15 kilometre long tunnel would really be an engineering and technical marvel looking into the difficult and mountainous pass it would be running through.
There were some design changes etc envisaged and planned in the prestigious project to do away with ‘escape’ tunnels etc just to keep cost escalation at bay . It is learnt that the Government wants the tunnel to be built at the earliest within the estimated cost only for which fresh tenders are being invited. We wish that this tunnel was built and completed at the earliest so that better and assured connectivity with saving of time could be possible between the two Union Territories.
