NOWSHERA, Apr 8: The people from Laam area today held protest demonstration at Sub-Divisional headquarters here in protest against the failure of Akhnoor police authorities for the arrest of accused involved in taking out eyes of an Army Jawan, Rakesh Kumar, who was found thrown into the forest after torture in Chowki Chora area few days back.
The family members and relatives of soldier Rakesh Kumar of Kamla village in Laam and the people from the area besides activists of VHP, Bajrang Dal and Beopar Mandal Nowshera assembled at Patel Chowk Nowshera at around 10 am today and staged massive protest demonstration and raised slogans against the police authorities in Akhnoor tehsil for their failure to trace and arrest the accused involved in damaging eyes of the soldier. Rakesh Kumar was posted in an RR unit located in Kishtwar area. He had come to his village on leave and was returning to his unit. He went missing and he was found lying unconscious in a nallah in forest area of Chowki Chora after two days.
The soldier is now undergoing treatment in Military Hospital, Satwari in Jammu. The protesting villagers demanded that all the accused be arrested and Rakesh who has lost eyes be shifted to some reputed hospital in the country so that his vision could be restored. They disrupted movement of traffic in the main Bazar and then moved to Jammu-Poonch National Highway at around 12 noon. They disrupted the movement of traffic for about fifty minutes. The SDM and Police officers reached there and assured the people to take up the matter with Akhnoor police and Army authorities at Jammu. On their assurance the people then lifted dharna. They also demanded that wife of the soldier be provided job.
