Should they really “need” any protection and from whom and why – should perplex , bemuse and astonish all of us as we live in a civilized society. Should saviours too need protection from the ones whom they try to save ? It is aptly said that even if we ‘pay’ the Doctor for his trouble , for his kindness we always remain in his debt . At the outset, our emotional and reverential tributes to all those medicos wherever they served the humanity in this grave crisis but who had to pay the ultimate price for it. At the same time, condemnation, ridicule and denunciation for those who dare to assault, abuse and even attack those noble persons who engaged in this noble profession and braving all risks and sacrificing their personal preferences and comforts are, day in and day out, treating Corona virus infected persons in the country. Apart from the relevant legal provisions invoked against such elements , they should face social ostracism as well . That the Ministry of Home Affairs directing states and Union Territories to ensure adequate “protection” to Doctors and Medical staff going to hospitals and quarantine centres during the currency of the COVID-19 pandemic, lends credence to apprehensions that such incidents having taken place could be more in number than an isolated or two incidents.
That at certain places, Doctors and other medical staff , the front row warriors, shall have to be given protection and that also from fellow citizens speaks very poorly about the particular mindset at work which has led to such a situation where police protection has become inevitable. Not only medical staff but at many places , police personnel too are attacked and lockdown brazenly and wilfully violated. While any type of intimidation of and assault on Doctors and other medical staff is condemned in strongest words, at the same time a bestial and barbaric attack by a few lockdown breakers in Punjab too is strongly condemned where a hand of a police person on duty was chopped off and two others injured in an attack . However, it is a matter of great relief that his amputated hand was rejoined by a team of Doctors at a premier Medical Institute and the complicated surgery lasted for over 8 hours. Hats off to these Doctors who have done a wonderful job. It is wondered that the frontline warriors fighting such a horrendous war as never seen before , for us , the citizens of this country, should be attacked instead of feeling beholden to. This behaviour by some people, especially in conditions of crisis like an epidemic, pandemic , earthquakes and other natural calamities is reminiscent of either some mental disorders or the result of some intrigues and designs to create disturbances , generate fear and mistrust in the public and torpedo the expected positive and encouraging results of various measures undertaken by the Government machinery.
While such incidents could be counted on the finger tips only, overall exemplary positive response shown by the people of this country in observing the provisions of the lockdown very strictly , have set new benchmarks in the entire world, that of self discipline and compliance of Government regulations . It is again praiseworthy that young cadets of the NCC and NSS , volunteers of Civil Defence too have come forth to contribute their mite in containment of the Corona virus . Likewise, personnel from Central Arms Police Force are doing their part in running awareness campaign among the people about the dreaded virus . Police personnel providing dry rations and other essentials at the doorsteps of the needy at many places during the lockdown has projected the compassionate and empathetic role of the force. The Home Ministry has given relaxations in activities related to fisheries, agriculture , harvesting , packaging , processing , cold chain etc which is appreciated but social distancing is a pre requisite as any gains registered during the lockdown could be neutralised due to breach in taking precautions till the virus was finished in full from the country.
