SRINAGAR, Feb 21: The Meteorological (MeT) Department today issued a weather advisory according to which the State would be hit by two Western Disturbances in the next one week thus affecting the weather systems in the State.
In the weather advisory, Director MeT, Sonam Lotus said that the first weather disturbance would hit the state by tonight and it would continue on Friday and Saturday. Sonam Lotus said the second Western Disturbance would hit the State on February 27 and its impact would be felt on February 28 as well.
“A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching the State. The Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from tonight till the afternoon of February 23. The weather system would be disturbed in the State due to this Western Disturbance. Moderate rain/snowfall is likely to be recorded at most places of the state,” said Lotus.
He said because of moisture incursion from Arabian Sea, some places along Pir Panjal range and plains of Jammu are likely to receive heavy snowfall/rainfall during these days. He added that rain/snow is also likely to hit the Ladakh region due to the Western Disturbance.
“Another Western Disturbance is likely to affect the State on February 27 and 28. Due to these weather systems, moderate rain/snowfall (over hills) will occur at widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir regions and at a few places over Ladakh region. The day temperature is likely to come down by 6-7 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature will come down by 2-3 degrees Celsius,” Lotus said.
Meanwhile, after some days of mellow sunshine chill returned to Kashmir valley with the clouds hovering over the sky during the passage of the day. The day temperature at Srinagar on Thursday came down by almost seven degrees as compared to that of Wednesday.
Srinagar recorded the day temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius while as it was 16.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The minimum temperature in the summer capital of the State was recorded as 1.8 degrees Celsius. Jammu recorded the day temperature of 20.9 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as 10.6 degrees Celsius.
Kargil turned out to be the coldest place of the State with the maximum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 13.4 degrees Celsius. Leh recorded the maximum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature of minus 9.3 degrees Celsius.
The world famous health resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 7.3 degrees Celsius while as the night temperature was recorded as minus 3.7 degrees Celsius. Qazigund also in South Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 10.9 degrees Celsius and the night temperature of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius. Kupwara, the frontier district in North Kashmir recorded the day temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius and the night temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius.
At the same time, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Samoon has issued an avalanche warning in snow bound areas of Kupwara, Baramulla and Anantnag districts from February 21 to 24 in view of expected moderate to heavy snowfall. People living in these areas have been advised not to venture into steep avalanche-prone slopes during the said period and frequently remove snow from roof tops of their houses to avoid any causality due to house collapse.
Residents of Dudran-Boniyar, Uri in Baramulla district while talking to Excelsior urged the State Government to shift them to a safer place as they apprehend the snow avalanche may wipe off the entire village consisting of 40 households. The residents said that a hanging avalanche may hit them any time with the same likely to cause human casualties.
“The house of Mohammad Munawar Sheikh was completely damaged in the avalanche that hit during the preceding night. If immediate action is not taken then all the 40 houses may come under the avalanche and this would lead to destruction in the village,” the villagers said.
