JAMMU, Dec 23: Police arrested an ex-serviceman with 9 kg of high quality charas from Nagrota area here along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials said.
Mohammad Ayoub Malik, son of Abdul Kareem Malik of District Anantnag, who was arrested, signalled to stop his Santro car bearing registration number HP11B-8700 at a check point laid by SOG Jammu and sleuths from Police Station Nagrota but he tried to speed away, officials added.
After a brief chase, the police arrested Malik and recovered 9 kilograms of high quality charas worth lakhs of rupees in the international market, they added.
Malik was trying to smuggle the consignment outside the State, officials said, adding that a case under FIR Number 319/18 under section 8/20/21 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Nagrota and further investigation has been taken up to nab others involved in the illicit trade.
The arrest was made by SHO Nagrota Inspector Deepak Pathania under the supervision of SDPO Nagrota Mohan Sharma, SP Operations Jammu and Incharge SP Rural Sandeep Mehta and DIG JKS Range/SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta.
SP Operations Jammu Sandeep Mehta has appealed to the general public to cooperate and strengthen the hands of police to weed out the social evils from the society by providing inputs regarding the movement and activities of narcotics smugglers in their respective areas to police.
