3 accused involved in attack suspended

JAMMU, Nov 17: Even after the suspension of three accused locals, non-local students in NIT Srinagar continued their protest dharna on the campus for the second consecutive day on Saturday.
These non-local students are demanding rustication of the accused who had brutally assaulted their two colleagues inside the hostel room following some verbal dual on some issue on Thursday evening.
Following the incident, the non-local students boycotted classes and staged a protest on Friday inside the campus. Even as the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah visited the campus last night and assured the students that an impartial inquiry would be held and people responsible for the clashes will be punished, the later continued their protest for immediate action.
To pacify the situation, the NIT authorities today ordered constitution of an inquiry committee, which will examine the incident for further action. Till pending the enquiry, three accused students, involved in the attack, were also suspended.
However, the non-local students are still protesting and demanding rustication of the accused. Till filing of the report, around hundred students were sitting in front of the NIT Director’s office in support of their demand. They feared that if no strict action was taken, the accused would resort to similar attacks on them.
When contacted, Registrar of the NIT Srinagar, Nisar Mir told the Excelsior that a handful of students were un-necessarily protesting despite action against the alleged accused. Since the exams of Semester- I are going on, probably some students don’t want to allow the situation to get normalized for skipping the papers, he said and informed that only 60 to 70 students, out of more than 600, were participating in the protest.
