JAMMU, Nov 11: JKPCC chief, GA Mir has blamed BJP of depriving the women of 33% quota to the heads of ULBs including to those of SC/ST and OBCs as already provided in the State Municipal Act, at par with 74th amendment, done during congress regime in the State.
Mir said this was done deliberately as BJP did not have clear majority in most ULBs in the region and it wanted to grab these bodies by hook & crook. “A great injustice has been done to the women in the ULBs, while similar right is available to women in Rural PRIs, at all three tiers, like Panch, Sarpanch, Chairpersons of BDCs and District Boards”, he added.
He said that in the recently held ULB elections, the party gained heavily in Ladakh and Kashmir regions and its overall vote share in Jammu region multiplied many fold as compared to last elections. “Though BJP had lost most of ULBs in the region but it indulged in horse trading exercise to woo the independents and congress councilors, through influence of power, by delaying the elections to the presidents/vice-presidents of the MCs without any justified reason”, Mir added.
The JKPCC was addressing the meeting of senior leadership of the congress party comprising AICC Members from Jammu province, here today. The meeting took stock of the overall political scenario in the State besides reviewing the organizational activities in the wake of recent ULB Elections and ongoing election to the Panchayats in the State.
The party leaders felt the need to counter the fake propaganda and strategy of the BJP to further polarize the situation in the wake of coming general elections to the Lok Sabha and Assembly in future.
Prominent leaders present in the meeting include Mula Ram, Raman Bhalla, Sham Lal Sharma, Jugal Kishore Sharma, Suman Bhagat, Balwan Singh, Kanta Bhan, Ravinder Sharma, Naresh Gupta (MLC), Balbir Singh (MLC), Yogesh Sawhney and Dr Manohar Lal Sharma.
