Badminton Rankings: Sindhu secures second, Saina at 9th position

NEW DELHI: Despite losing in the first round of Denmark open last week, PV Sindhu managed to stay at number two, in the recent badminton ranking. Sindhu has secured the number two position, after a gap of one year.

Last year, her position kept fluctuating as she was second in last November, came down to third, then fourth and at last, she stayed at the third place. Sindhu was at number three in 2018, from March 15 to 18, but in the rankings released on Thursday, she took one-point jump and secured the second rank. Tai Tzu-Ying, winner of the Denmark Open, remains at number one spot, while Saina Nehwal of India, who lost to Ying in the Denmark Open final, has improved one place and has moved to the ninth position.

Akane Yamaguchi of Japan lost her second place and slipped to number three. Olympic champion Spain’s Carolina Marin has reached number four. India’s Kidambi Srikanth, who reached the semi-finals of the Denmark Open, retained his sixth position in the men’s rankings. Japan’s Kento Momota is at number one. HS Prannoy dropped two places and got 17th position, while Sameer Verma is in top 20, with an improvement of five points, securing the 18th position.

In the men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty dropped one place and are at the 25th position. In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy reached the 24th spot with three-point improvement. In mixed doubles, Pranav Chopra and N Sikki Reddy are at 21st place. (AGENCIES)
