JAMMU, Oct 6: World renowned senior Joint Replacement Surgeon from Fortis Escorts Hospital Amritsar, Dr Ranjit Singh, has started a new chapter in the era of knee replacement by performing a highly difficult and a challenging minimally invasive knee replacement surgery called as unicondylar knee replacement (UKR) or partial knee replacement.
The surgery was performed on a 55-year-old woman identified as Harbhajan Kaur of Amritsar. The patient was suffering from severe knee pain for last five years. She consulted many orthopedic surgeons and was advised for total knee replacement surgery but she was scared of the complications of Total Knee Replacement.
When she heard of partial knee replacement and its benefits, she consulted Dr Ranjit Singh from Fortis Escorts Hospital Amritsar and was convinced for the same. After successful surgery, the patient started walking after 2 hours and climbing stairs in just 2 days.
UKR or partial knee replacement is a new form of surgical treatment of Arthritis of the knee which is an option for more than 70% of patients who are undergoing total knee replacement. The procedure involves resurfacing of the worn out bony surface of the affected compartment of knee joint. In this procedure, only the damaged part of the knee cartilage is replaced with prosthesis and not all part (as in Total Knee Replacement).
Dr Singh is the only surgeon, who is trained by Oxford, England to perform this highly skillful and specialized surgery. Dr Singh has operated more than 6000 patients from various western and northern parts of the country. He is also the innovator of ‘Zero Error Technique’ in Total Knee Replacement.
Speaking about benefits of partial knee replacement, Dr Singh said that in this surgery only 3 inches cut is given on knee. He said as there is very minimal bone and muscle cutting in this procedure, pain and bleeding is negligible. Patient starts walking within 2 hours after surgery and stair climbing in just 2 days. Moreover, hospital stay is just for 2 days and physiotherapy and exercise is required only for 2 weeks.
