JAMMU, May 14: Based on the writings and short stories of Manto, a performance with the title ‘Mantonama’ was staged today by the well known theatre group of the country- Rangyug at its studio theatre.
Today’s performance woven with the short stories namely ‘Karamaat’,’ Sadak Ke Kinare’ and ‘Mein Kyun Likhta Hoon’ by Manto was highly appreciated by the audience. The actors included Pritam Katoch who enacted Manto and took the audience to that era where Manto was appreciated by some and criticized by many and all these shades were well projected by Katoch who made a well deserved comeback in theatre after a gap of decades.
Shadi Lal another senior actor also made his comeback on-stage with the performance. The budding actress Juhie who mesmerized the audience with her apt and truthful portrayal of the protagonist girl in the story ‘Sadak Ke Kinare’ was equally promising. Pranav Sadotra executed the music whereas Danish Sharma and Shivan Gupta did lights, costumes and sets of the play. The performance was designed and directed by the founder-director of Rangyug, Deepak Kumar.
The performance was marked to pay tribute to the legendary writer Saadat Hassan Manto the most widely read and the most controversial short story writer in Urdu who was born on 11 May 1912 at Sambrala in Punjab’s Ludhiana district and died a few months short of his forty-third birthday, in January 1955 in Lahore.
In a writing career spanning over two decades he produced twenty two collections of short stories, one novel, five collections of radio plays, three collections of essays, two of reminiscences and many scripts for films.
He was tried for allegedly including obscenity many times before and after Independence. Manto was known to write about the atrocious truths that no one dared to talk about. He is also known for his stories about the partition of the subcontinent immediately following independence in 1947.
