Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 10: J&K Confederation of Social and Charitable Organizations has urged the Government to monitor the working of NGOs on regular basis and constitute local committees as watch dog to make them socially accountable. In a statement issue here today president of the Confederation H N Tiku said that NGOs are working for the betterment of the society and mankind but for the wrong doings of some of them all NGOs are blamed and held responsible which is not appropriate. He expressed concern over the Government move to take up the work being done by NGOs in its own hands which is not a good step. Instead of taking the work form NGOs it should create an effective mechanism for the work in the NGOs and reward those who are doing a good job, he added. He said for some time now overtly and covertly references are made to working of the NGOs and in many cases adverse remarks are passed on these. This way the NGOs run by people with noble credentials feel hurt and they some times lose interest in their work which otherwise they were doing with strong commitment and dedication. Mr Tiku said that the NGOs are not bad in their spirit or in mission but it is the system that needs to be toned up as all NGOs can’t be described as inefficient or selfish as there are many NGOs which have earned national and international applause.
