LUCKNOW: Former India skipper MS Dhoni reckons that the country has immense potential and to excel in sports, one need to maintain fitness along with talent however when compared to international level, Indian athletes lag in fitness.
After inaugurating Sports galaxy here, Dhoni said that fitness is essential in sports and an athlete can rise up to any height in any discipline if he can maintain fitness along with talent. The Ranchi stumper said that the scenario has however changed nowadays as earlier parents were not in favour of sending their children in sports. He said that now the parents come along with their childrens to grounds to motivate them for sports.
Dhoni said,”If I was not a cricketer, I would have aspired to be a footballer or badminton player.”
The 36-year-old further said that he had special attraction for football and badminton in school days and was serious to take it as a profession but later he inclined towards cricket.
Dhoni said small towns have big talents and big sportsmen come from small town. He said he was paying special attention to his fitness for next world cup.
Speaking about cricketers of Uttar Pradesh, the legendary cricketer said that cricket gets legends from this state though bowlers of UP were not much appreciated in international cricket yet may of them have starred at the national level. “Even I have faced UP bowling stream in under 19 tournaments,” Dhoni said.
“Infrastructure and other things are not that much important for a player to get Olympic or some other prestigious medal in spots rather hard work and zeal of a sportsmen pave way for the dais of winners,” said Dhoni, adding that athletes works very hard for years to get place in Olympics, common wealth or world cup.
Inaugurating ‘Sports galaxy’, the cricketer said that the academy will provide training for enthusiastic budding sportsmen not only for cricket but for other sports.
