KATHUA, Feb 16: The Border Welfare Committee (BWC) which had launched an agitation for the settlement of their long pending demands and had resorted to fast unto death have called off the same on the assurance of Deputy Chief Minster, Dr Nirmal Singh that their grievances will be settled on priority basis.
A delegation of the Committee led by Bharat Bushan its vice president called on Dr Nirmal Singh today and took up the issues with him. The Deputy C M informed the delegation that the present State Government as well as the Union Government is very much concerned for the welfare of the people of J&K in general and those living on border in particular and various steps have already been initiated for the welfare and betterment of these people.
He said the BJP has always stood by the cause of the border people and it is well versed with the problems of denizens and assured them that all the demands will be settled on priority basis.
The Committee among other things is demanding that border people be given the same benefits which are given to people living on LoC. They demanded RBA status be given to border area people right from Kathua to Akhnoor, compensation for the land and crops including compensation for State land which has come under fencing and was being cultivated by them , compensation for land which has come under ditch cum bundh, track zero link etc, and for crops. Moreover Rs five crore on account of compensation lying with Deputy Commissioner for a decade now be paid to people.
It may be recalled these people had launched protest in front of SDM Office Hiranagar over a week back and were sitting on dharna since then.
