SRINAGAR, Feb 1: At least seventeen cattle were charred to death today after fire broke out in a Government-run animal farm in Rambirbagh area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The Government- run Livestock Development Board’s Bull Mother Farm caught fire last night in which 17 animals were burned to death and entire farm was gutted. “At around 2 am we heard the screaming of the employees. They were crying for help. But before the locals could reach, whole farm was engulfed in flames. Later the firemen came and doused the fire,” Shamim Ahmad, a local said.
An official at the farm said 10 Jersey Cows, 06 Jersey Calves and 01 Buffalo calf died in the incident and the cause of fire was being ascertained. “The cause of the fire is not known yet. Police will investigate the issue. However, no loss or injury of human life in this incident,” he said.
A police official, however, said that short circuit was the likely cause of the fire and further investigation has been taken up. A case under FIR No 05/18 U/S 429,436 RPC was also registered, police said.
