JAMMU, Jan 29: After hiatus of a few years, Rangyug, dedicated to Theatre for Self-Realization and Social Change, once again established itself on the firmament of J&K State’s theatre scenario with an impressive performance of Dharamvir Bharti’s Hindi play Andha Yug, at the Studio Rangyug, here today.
Today’s performance, produced as part of Rangyug’s ongoing 360 hours Theatre Training program in which the young theatre enthusiasts are learning the basics of theatre, bore the distinct stamp of Group’s predilection for innovation and experimentation. The very fact that the cast of greenhorns, many of whom have no experience of theatre acting, had the gumption of picking up the modern Indian classic play ‘Andha Yug’ as their first challenge, speaks of young actors’ commitment to creative theatre. This certainly a glad news for the future of serious theatre practice in the winter capital.
Andha Yug, which begins on the evening of the eighteenth day of the Mahabharata war and ends with the death of Lord Krishna, is essentially a play about morality: it questions whether we are accountable for our moral choices; whether the quality of our actions can transcend the time, place, and circumstances of our existence; and whether we can be more than agents of destiny.
Today’s performance in the intimate space of Studio Rangyug came out as an intense experience for the audience the way young actors in a highly synchronized and almost choreographed movements, groupings, transformed from ‘chorus’ to individuals roles and brought alive the moral positioning, predicaments, of the enacted characters, through excellent voice control in terms of modulations, pitch, and tone.
The minimal sets, subdued lights, intercepted with mellow twinkling incandescent lights of earthen lamps, and thoughtful background music-all added to the impact of the edited version of the play. The cast in different roles included Juhi Singh as Gandhari, Vishal Sharma (Vasu) as Ashwatthama, Vishal Sharma as ‘Vridh Yachak’, Pranav as Vidur, Shivan as Dhritarashtra, Danu as Vyas, Sahil Sharma as Sanjay and Nadeem as Krishna, Dipansh and Sonik as Yuyutsu and Prehari.
The performance’s design, right from music, costumes, sets, lights to acting was conceived & executed by the trainees themselves under the guidance of founder-director  Deepak Kumar supported by Juhie Mohan, Soham Kashyap & Rajkumar Behrupia all veteran actors of Rangyug. The production was supported by Mukesh, Kuldeep, Rishi, Deepak, Param & Aryan in the backstage who are also the students of 360 hrs of theatre training. The 1-hour performance of this play shall continue till 31st January daily in Studio Rangyug at 6.15 PM..
