Cabinet approves raising superannuation age of non-CHS doctors to 65 years

NEW DELH: The Union Cabinet today gave its ex-post facto approval for enhancing the superannuation age to 65 years for doctors of Indian Railways Medical Service.
Briefing the press afterwards, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Cabinet also gave its ex-post facto approval to enhance the retirement age to 65 years for doctors working in Central Universities and IITs (autonomous bodies) under Department of Higher Education and doctors in major port trusts (autonomous bodies) under the Ministry of Shipping.
The move is expected to benefit around 1,445 doctors of various ministries/departments of the Central Government, he said.
”The superannuation age has been enhanced to 65 years in respect of doctors under their administrative control of the respective Ministries/Departments [Ministry of AYUSH (AYUSH doctors), Department of Defence (civilian doctors under Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Service), Department of Defence Production (Indian Ordnance Factories Health Service Medical Officers), dental doctors under Department of Health & Family Welfare, dental doctors under Ministry of Railways and of doctors working in Higher Education and Technical Institutions under Department of Higher Education.” The Cabinet meet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Union Cabinet also empowered respective ministries/departments/organisations to take an appropriate decision in respect of the age of doctors for holding the charge of administrative position as per the functional requirement, Mr Prasad said.
Today’s decision would help in better patient care, proper academic activities in medical colleges as also in effective implementation of National Health Programmes for delivery of health care services.
However, the decision would not have much financial implications as a large number of posts were lying vacant and the present incumbents would continue to work in their existing capacity against sanctioned posts.
Earlier, the age of superannuation of doctors of Central Health Service was enhanced to 65 years effective from May 31, 2016.
The non-CHS doctors, including of other systems of medicine of the Central Government, had sought raising age of superannuation on the ground of parity with CHS and shortage. (AGENCIES)
