LEH, Aug, 27: Remembe-ring the UT martyrs, political and religious leaders paid rich tribute to Nawang Rinchen of Sankar village, Tsering Stobdan of Durbuk, and Tsewang Dorjey of Saboo, popularly known as Nawang, Dorjay and Stobdan, at martyrs’ memorial park Skyatsaks here on their 28th death anniversary.
They sacrificed their lives in firing on August 27 1989 during the agitation launched to demand UT Status for Ladakh.
Tributes were also paid to Lobzang Tsondus of Likir and Tashi Angchuk of Saspol who sacrificed their lives on January 24 1981 during an agitation launched to demand Schedule Tribe (ST) status to Ladakhis.
Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) organized wreath laying ceremony at Martyrs Memorial Park Skyatsaks, in which large number of prominent citizen, family members, relatives, well wishers including LAHDC Chief Executive Councilor Dr Sonam Dawa, Executive Councilors, Councilors, LBA President Tsewang Thinless, Congress Legislator Party Leader MLA Nawang Rigzin Jora, religious leaders, political party leaders and general public participated. Monks from Lingshed monastery chanted special prayer for the departed souls and gathering observed two minutes silence to pay homage.
President LBA Tsewang Thinles handed over papers of allotment of land in favor of the families of the martyrs as a token of honor, while CEC, LAHDC Dr Sonam Dawa informed that land proposed to be allotted in favor of the families from LAHDC are also in the pipeline.
Taking about Ladakh’s demand for UT, LBA president said that efforts will be made to take Kargil also on board. Thinles also said that a documentary film is being made and will be screened next year so that younger generation will get the knowledge about the struggle that led to the formation of LAHDC.
Paying tributes to the martyrs, Nawang Rigzin Jora proposed participations of school students in the observation of the martyrs’ day from next year onwards so that coming generation will be acquainted with sacrifices made by these Ladakhis for Ladakh’s cause. Jora also announced to support martyrs families under IAY scheme in the next financial year out of the constituency development fund.
In the end, President LBA Youth Rinchen Namgyal presented vote of thanks.
Meanwhile Leh remained shutdown for half day in the memory of the martyrs.
